Egg chair cushions: replacing the pad, adding scatters and keeping them dry

The hanging egg chair is the most-bought garden chair of the last few years, and its cushion is almost always the first thing to go. What to do about it.

The problem with the original pad

Most egg chairs ship with a shaped seat-and-back pad in printed polyester over thin foam. It sits in a bowl that collects water, the print fades in a season, and the foam goes flat and mouldy. Because it is a specific shape, people assume it cannot be replaced. It can.

Replacement options

  1. Shaped replacement pad, made to measure. Send us the original pad's outline (lay it on paper and trace, or measure height, width at the widest, and the seat depth) and we make it in Sunbrella® over quick-dry foam. This is the proper fix. See made to measure.
  2. Two-piece: seat pad plus back cushion. A 50×50 or 60×60 seat pad and a 45×45 or 50×50 back cushion. Easier to take in and dry, and most people prefer it after a season.
  3. Scatter cushions only. Keep the original pad and add two 45×45 scatter cushions for colour and comfort. The cheapest option and the fastest to change.
Rule of thumb

Single egg chair: 50×50 seat + 45×45 back. Double egg chair: 2 × 50×50 seat + 2 × 45×45 back. Scatter on top: 1-2 per seat.

Keeping an egg chair cushion dry

The chair itself is a bowl. Rain runs down the weave and pools in the seat, so the pad sits in water after every shower. Three things help: a draining filling (hollow fibre or reticulated foam, never standard foam), a cover that is water-repellent but breathable so trapped water can leave, and taking the pad out and standing it on edge after a downpour. A cover that is fully waterproof makes this worse, not better; see why.

Colours that work on an egg chair

Egg chairs are usually grey, black or natural rattan and sit against a wall or in a corner. Because the chair is a strong shape on its own, a single colour family looks best: sand and natural white on grey; rust and charcoal on black; sage and stone on natural. Stripes work on the back cushion only. Browse by colour.

Covers and stands

A breathable cover over the whole chair in winter keeps leaves out of the bowl. Put it on dry. The stand and chain do not mind rain; the cushion is the only part that does.

Questions about this

Can I get a replacement cushion for a hanging egg chair?

Yes. Trace the original pad or send measurements and we make one in Sunbrella fabric with quick-dry foam, or a two-piece seat and back set.

What size cushions for an egg chair?

A 50×50 seat pad and a 45×45 back cushion suit most single egg chairs.

Why does my egg chair cushion get so wet?

The chair is bowl-shaped and collects water. A draining filling and a breathable cover let it dry; a waterproof cover traps it.
