Which cushions go with grey rattan furniture? Colours that work, and the one that does not
Grey rattan came with grey cushions. That is why the set looks like a hotel lobby. The furniture is fine; it needs a colour that is not grey.
Why grey on grey fails
Grey rattan is a cool, mid-tone, matt surface. Grey cushions on it have no contrast in colour, tone or texture, so the eye slides off the whole set. Add the usual British sky and you have grey on grey under grey. The fix is not a brighter grey. It is warmth.

- Warm and safe: sand (most), olive (some), terracotta (one or two). Works with any planting.
- Dark and modern: charcoal base, rust main, blush accent. For dark grey or anthracite rattan.
- Coastal: natural white, navy, one navy stripe. For light grey rattan near water or on a balcony.
Grey rattan wants warmth. If the cushion colour would look good on a terracotta pot, it will look good on grey rattan.
Light grey versus dark grey rattan
Light grey rattan takes the full range above. Dark grey or anthracite rattan is sharper and suits the darker palette: charcoal, rust, plum, with sand to lighten. Avoid pale pastels on anthracite; they look like they are floating.
