How long do outdoor cushions last? Fabric by fabric, honestly
The fabric decides how long the colour lasts. The filling decides how long the comfort lasts. Storage decides whether either gets the chance.
Realistic lifespans

These are what we see come back to the workshop, not lab figures. Left outside all year, halve the numbers for everything except the Sunbrella® row, which mostly needs cleaning rather than replacing.
What wears out first
- Colour. Printed fabric fades from the first week of sun. Solution-dyed fabric does not fade visibly within the warranty period. See does Sunbrella fade.
- Filling. Foam goes flat and yellow; hollow fibre slowly compacts but can be shaken up or swapped. See filling guide.
- Stitching and zips. Ordinary thread rots in UV before the fabric does. We use UV-stabilised thread for that reason.
- Water-repellent finish. Weakens with washing and harsh detergents. On Sunbrella® it can be refreshed with a fabric guard spray after a few years.
Cost per summer: a €12 cushion that lasts one summer costs more than a €35 cushion that lasts seven.
Signs it is time to replace
- Colour is uneven: pale on top, original underneath. The print has gone.
- The cushion stays flat after shaking and does not spring back.
- Musty smell that survives two washes: mould in the foam.
- Seams opening or the fabric tearing at the zip.
Making cushions last longer
Store them dry in winter, wash the covers once a season, never put them away damp, and keep fabric softener away from them. With a removable cover you can also replace just the inner cushion at a fraction of the cost. The whole care routine is in how to clean outdoor cushions.
