Best fabric for outdoor cushions in the UK climate: what to look for

The UK is not the hardest place for outdoor fabric because of sun. It is hard because things never quite dry. That changes what "best" means.

What a UK garden does to a cushion

  • Damp. Long periods of 80-90% humidity, dew every morning. Anything that absorbs water stays wet.
  • UV in bursts. Low overall, but a few weeks of strong sun on a south-facing patio fade a printed fabric visibly.
  • Algae and tannin. Green film on the north side, brown leaf marks in autumn.
  • Wind. Light cushions blow away; heavy foam cushions stay but soak.

The five things to check

  1. Solution-dyed fibre. Acrylic or olefin. The label will say so; if it does not, it is printed.
  2. Water-repellent, not waterproof. Sealed covers trap moisture. See the difference.
  3. Draining filling. Hollow fibre or reticulated foam in a water-permeable inner.
  4. Bleach cleanable. Because algae will happen. Only solution-dyed fabric survives bleach.
  5. A real warranty. Sunbrella® furniture fabric: 5 years against fading and weathering. Most olefins: 2-3. Polyester: none that mentions fading.
Our recommendation

Sunbrella® solution-dyed acrylic cover, hollow-fibre filling, hidden zip. It is the only combination we have seen come through five UK winters looking new.

Weight and wind

A 45×45 hollow-fibre cushion weighs around 500 g and will blow off a chair in a gale. Ties help on dining chairs; for scatter cushions, simply bring them in when it is wild. Foam cushions stay put but hold water, which is the worse trade. More on fillings in foam vs hollow fibre.

Colour in British light

Grey skies flatten colour, so mid-tones that look rich in a Mediterranean catalogue look dull here. Warm, saturated tones and clear stripes hold up best; we cover this in colour ideas for British light.

Questions about this

What is the best waterproof fabric for outdoor cushions?

You want water-repellent, not waterproof. Sunbrella solution-dyed acrylic with a draining filling dries faster and lasts longer than any sealed fabric.

Is Sunbrella worth it in the UK?

Yes. Damp is harder on cushions than sun, and Sunbrella dries in hours and can be bleached clean of algae every spring.

Which fabric lasts longest outdoors?

Solution-dyed acrylic. Sunbrella carries a 5-year warranty and commonly lasts twice that.
